Twin Boys Shared Room

My boys' room is one of my favorite spaces in our house, because it's just simple and sweet.
I've found some statement pieces that appeal to both them and me, but it generally stays very clutter free because there just isn't stuff to become cluttered in there, and I really like that. It's what I would ideally really like for our entire house, but most of the other rooms in our house just have more stuff than this. Being in their room just brings me a lot of joy and makes me feel at ease, and I like that feeling.
When I was dreaming up what I wanted for their room, I had a lot of different ideas but I ultimately decided to go with a black & white theme. I thought that it would give a streamlined, simple, classic look while also being able to find things we liked to fit in. I also have a kiddo with some sensory needs, so keeping it basic was important for that reason as well-not much to overwhelm him when he's in there.
For now, we are doing floor beds with them. We were just switching them out of cribs when we moved into this house and wanted to see how they would do, and it has worked out really well having their beds on the floor. My boys are boys and are really hard on things, so it's just less furniture for them to destroy ;) We have toyed with the idea of building little pallet beds or something in the future.
So, welcome to my sons' room!

This was a verse I prayed over the boys a lot when they were in foster care and we were quite literally fighting the system. The whole chapter of Exodus 14 was very comforting to me and reminded me of Who is in control. Read it if you haven't :)

That's pretty much it! They have a dresser in their closet, and most of their toys are in the play area we have in our basement.
Thanks for checking it out! Is there any space in our house you'd like to see next? I am trying to get around to photographing rooms now that a lot of them are complete! We're working on our master now, so hopefully I'll have that done and can share it soon!

Souper Soup Recipe

I've found that sometimes if I give food a different name, my kids will eat it.
Like cucumbers. "I don't like cucumbers," they said. So I called them pepinos (spanish for cucumber) and what do you know, they liked pepinos. Same with beans. They don't like beans, but they'll eat frijoles. #kids.
My husband and I love this soup. It's hearty and filling and just really hits the spot on a cold day. It's veggie packed and you can really put whatever you want in it, but our kids thought they wouldn't like it until I called it souper soup and again, whaddyaknow.
I took a couple of different vegetable beef recipes I was following and mixed and matched with the veggies my family likes best and that's how I came up with this recipe. It'll make a nice big batch, so there'll definitely be leftovers for lunch the next day! Hope you enjoy it!

Here's what you'll need:
  • 2 lbs ground beef, drained
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4-6 carrots, peeled & chopped
  • 3-4 red potatoes, chopped
  • 1 cup corn
  • red bell pepper, diced
  • green bell pepper, diced
  • yellow or orange bell pepper, diced
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 2 cans diced tomatoes (or any type of tomatoes)
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons dried parsley

Here's what you'll do:

Brown the beef with onion, celery & garlic; drain. Add the rest of the ingredients, bring to a boil, then cover & reduce to simmer for about 20 minutes or until potatoes are soft.

Serve it with some warm bread on the side!

Enjoy, and try to stay warm!!

Welcome to Our Home!

My friend Callie has been doing room tours of her house and today when I was deep cleaning our entry way, I thought 'hey, I should join in!' So, here I am! What better time to take pictures of an area of your home than right after it's been cleaned/decluttered, right?!
I want to start sharing more photos of our home as we get rooms complete, and the entry way has been done for a long time, so this seems like a great place to start.
If you came over for dinner and knocked on the front door, here is what you'd see when I opened it...
To the left of the front door is a long window, and this cabinet. I got the cabinet for a steal on black Friday last year, before we had even moved into the house. I hoped it would look good here, and thankfully it fits perfectly.

I change out the decor on top and in the little cubbies seasonally, which has been really fun.
The real reason I got this cabinet is function. I was looking for a shoe storage solution for my kids. At our last house, shoes ended up allllll over the place and drove me nuts. I wanted to corral them, and this has been the perfect solution. Since it sits right inside our entry way, the kids have their shoes inside the doors, and there's never any reason for them to wear shoes in the house, or to lose shoes. It's also nice when we're getting ready to leave because instead of going to get shoes and getting distracted, they just pop their shoes on on the way out the door. It has worked out great! I got some bins from Target which fit perfectly inside. I know this solution won't work forever as their shoes get bigger and they don't all fit in here, but for now I absolutely love it!
Beautiful, functional decor is my favorite.

If you would go to the right, behind the front door, I have a shoe tray for guests shoes (or kids boots in the winter), and coat hooks for the kids (which is bare right now because it's summer, but in the winter, trust me, it gets jam packed).
The mirror was a random buy when we were at Home Depot right around the time we moved. They had it deeply discounted and I liked the color and size, so I bought it, not knowing exactly where it would go. It fits exactly in that spot-if it were even 1/16 of an inch bigger it wouldn't have fit! Meant to be. And it's the exact same gray as the cabinet.

It's hard to photograph the whole space, but you can get a feel for it in the picture below. We also have a coat closet in the same area, which is really convenient. We have 3 sets of stairs off of the entry way, 2 going up and 1 down.

I love all of the natural light that comes in from the windows, the large space for a lot of people to come in at the same time, the high ceiling which makes it feel even bigger, and the easy to clean tile.
I have thought of adding a wooden sign above the closet and garage door, but I'm not sure it needs it and I haven't found just the right thing. Other than that, besides changing out the decor on the cabinet seasonally, this is how it'll stay!
Thanks for stopping by!

New House

6 months ago we moved into a new home. I realized recently that I had only really ever mentioned that in passing here on my blog. Well it is impossible to believe we have lived here for 6 months already...it seems like a couple months at most. I thought I would give a little back story on our move, and then maybe share some room "tours" as I get things finished (I am the slowest decorator ever-you'd think we would be done after 6 months...)

The last home we lived in was supposed to be a 5 year home. But, adding 2 kids to the mix, we quickly outgrew it. I hate to say that we needed more space, because I know we had enough but it was very crammed. The kitchen was tiny and keeping enough food and cooking supplies on hand for 6 people was almost impossible in that small space. We only had 2 bedrooms upstairs, so the boys were down in the basement, which felt too far away if something were to happen. We were planning on staying our full 5 years because of the program that we built our house through. If we left before 5 years, we had to pay back a prorated amount, so it really wasn't on our radar to move yet. 5 years would have been next April (2019).
I enjoy browsing homes on Zillow. Weird pastime, I know, but it was helpful to look at houses both for decor ideas and just to see what types of homes were in our area in our price range so we could start thinking about what we wanted in our next house. One day, I was browsing on Zillow and I came on this house and fell in love with it. Somehow, it had been on the market for almost a year and I had never come across it. It didn't even cross my mind to consider buying the house, but the layout was very interesting-unlike any I have seen in this area ever before, and I wanted to show my husband because we liked to bookmark certain layouts or things we liked in homes. The layout, we later found out, is called a "dropped foyer". You can see in the picture below, how only the foyer is dropped down just a little bit, making the whole house very open. I have had people say "oh, so it's a split level" when I try to describe it, but it's really not. I feel like the picture shows it better than I can explain it in words.

That evening I showed him, and he had also come home with some news about our current house/repayment situation that opened up a door for us. The house we were browsing was new construction that had been sitting empty since the builder finished it. We had some uncertainties that made us unsure it was even an option for us (like, we were under the impression there was an expensive HOA-later found out there's not) but we called the builder anyway and went to tour it a day or two later. We had driven by the same night we found it and the lot that it was on was incredible. A huge yard in town, and a very convenient location. My husband had just started a new job and this made it a lot closer for him, and is right down the road from where my kids do homeschool classes once a week, not to mention 3 minutes away from literally everything I could need to survive-Target, Walmart, movie theater, bank, doctor, Chick fil a, Caribou, Starbucks, a bunch of other restaurants and stores (it's a little dangerous, to be honest).
So when we met with the builder to tour the house, one of the questions we asked was 'how much would it be to build this same house (with a few cosmetic changes to our liking) in a year or two?' Because this particular house had dropped in price significantly due to sitting on the market so long (they were really desperate to get rid of it by this point as they needed it sold to be able to buy more lots and build more houses!) The realization after talking to him was that it would be up to $40-50k more on a way smaller lot, with probably less finishes and upgrades.
We thought and prayed about it and decided to make a move, so we put in an offer contingent on our house selling. This means the house would be under contract, but we wouldn't set a closing date until our house was under contract, and they could still market and show the house. If they got another offer we had 48 hours to either remove the contingency and set a closing date, or back out.

They accepted the offer right away and we needed to get our house ready to sell. There was a lot we hadn't done yet, thinking we had a couple years. Our realtor was out of town for a week, so we basically spent every waking hour that week moving a bunch of stuff to my in-laws, cleaning every surface and finishing a bunch of stuff (putting closet doors on, touching up paint, finishing trim in the basement, etc.) It was a looooong week. But we got it done, our realtor got back into town and we put our house up. 2 weeks before that we hadn't even been thinking of moving. We had to get so much stuff squared away with the bank, our realtor, etc. we thought there was no way it would all work out, but it all fell into place very quickly.
The day it went up on the market we had a showing within 2 hours and a few hours after that we had an offer. For $20K below the asking price and contingent on their house selling (wasn't on the market yet and they wanted to do sale by owner). Womp womp. For the first day on the market, we weren't ready to go that low yet. But we had hope that since it had gone that well the first day, we shouldn't have any trouble selling it. Unfortunately, we were listing right before the holidays hit, so we had showing after showing after showing after showing.....of mostly not serious buyers who were just "browsing". The serious buyers we did see it was either the wrong location, or not big enough mostly, but we heard the most random and weird complaints. Like one person said it was exactly 150 square feet too small. This was a single person. We had 6 people living there. I understand everyone's preferences and needs are different, but to have that specific of a square footage requirement just made me laugh. One person didn't like that we had a tree in our backyard because it could fall over and crush the house. Lol, ok. This went on for a couple months and it was so hard to keep the house clean and get 4 kids and a dog out of the house day after day after day. We decided to pull the contingency and set a closing date on our new house so that we could be out of the house and not have to deal with the showings anymore. We were set for January 2 to close on the new house.

In December, things were crazy. We went to New York, it was Christmas and then I got really sick. It was one week before we were set to move and we hadn't packed a single box. I couldn't figure out how to have showings with boxes everywhere so we had planned on speed packing the last week and doing no showings that week.
Exactly 3 days before we were set to close on the new house, and one week before moving, with zero boxes packed yet, we received a great offer on our house! It all worked out so perfectly. We were able to take those few days to get a ton of stuff packed, then close on the house and while the painters were there that week, I was able to get window coverings done, move some clothes and things over, have our appliances delivered, etc. It was also great because we had a few weeks before we had to officially be out of the old house, so we had time to get it cleared out and cleaned up, which meant we could just focus on getting moved and settled in for a week or two.
Besides the fact that the price and the lot were right, the biggest reason we made a move on this house was because we had made a list at one time of all the things we wanted in our next house. We each added things to the list and put them into the categories of absolute must haves and would be nice to haves. Of that entire list, this house had every single thing except one of the "would be nice's". It is definitely not the perfect house-I would have chosen some different cosmetic things and wish the kids bedrooms were bigger- but it is pretty close to perfect for us!

One of the biggest things we wanted in a house was space to entertain. Our first house was old and large and we hosted and even had people live with us. We both really enjoy hosting and at our previous house it was almost impossible with the size and layout of the home. We want our house to be a blessing to others and to be a place where people can gather and share life together. We really want it to be a place where everyone who steps foot inside feels at home and like they belong here. We have already been able to host so many gatherings, out of town family and friends, and do so much life here and that has been the best and most important part of moving here.
Aside from that we love that it has a bigger kitchen (seriously so stinkin glad to have cabinet and counter space to cook for my family!), a huge yard for our kids and their friends to run and play in, a big basement for company to stay in (my whole family is out of state!), and a separate dining space (our last house had the table IN the kitchen which was the worst design ever). There are plenty of other little things that we could certainly live without but are really enjoying like main floor laundry and a master bath-those things are just the cherry on top of a really good thing.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading! I am really looking forward to many more years of life with my precious family and friends in this place God has given us.

Another Grocery Haul- Costco/Trader Joe's Haul Video

Grocery hauls are WAY easier for me to do via video than to take pictures and list everything out. I am going to try to do these a little more often because they are always some of my most popular posts. I went to Costco and Trader Joe's to get some of our groceries for the month of April. I will fill in at Walmart or Aldi each week for produce, dairy, and more perishable items or anything I may have forgotten.
My total at Costco was $290 and Trader Joe's was $167.89.

Let me know what your favorite Costco & Trader Joe's items are and what you like to feed your family for breakfast, lunch and snacks!

Trader Joe's Haul

It always makes me laugh that "haul" type posts are so popular. I completely love them as well, but I honestly can't pinpoint what is so exciting about them?! If you know, tell me. And if you don't watch haul videos on YouTube, don't start--they're addicting!
So naturally, it was time for a Trader Joe's haul. We went randomly last night, kind of spur of the moment, because we were a few miles away at Costco anyway. This is the first time I've been to this one, so we found some old favorites and some new things to try. I'll list the prices for everything and for reference I am in the midwest, so they may or may not be the same at your local TJs. Also, I apologize in advance for the bad lighting and phone pictures. I quickly took these as we were rushing in the door to get the kids down for bed and before all the frozen stuff thawed out, so I know they're not great.

I am trying to get back to planning my menu for the whole month, doing a big grocery shop at the beginning of the month with most of the shelved and frozen things, and then just grabbing perishables each week or so. We go through gobs of produce every week, so there's no way we could last more than a week between grocery runs. So, a good majority of this (plus some things I got at Costco) should last through the month as far as snacks, breakfast items, etc. and I will still need to run to Aldi and Walmart this week to finish getting everything I need for the month. If that makes no sense to you, I wrote a post here about how I do that. It has been more than 6 months since I've planned/shopped this way and I noticed how much more we ate out and how much less prepared I was in general.

Organic Probiotic smoothies- $3.69 (per each 4 pack)
Organic Yogurt Squishers- $3.19 each I would have gotten enough to last the month, but the expiration date was mid March

What are your favorite TJs items??

Boys Room Plans

The whole time we were fostering the boys, I just could never bring myself to pull the trigger on decorating their room. Their bedroom had previously been our playroom, so of course we moved and changed a lot of things to make it their room, but as far as actually going with a theme and fully decorating it, I just couldn't. I think I wanted it to be so personal to them, and not knowing if they were going home, or to another foster home or staying, I just felt so conflicted on it. I came up with a lot of ideas, but every time I almost got ready to do it, I just didn't. They are also full on BOYS and love to destroy things, so we ended up having to move their cribs away from walls and taking down a lot of the art work and things we did have up. Now that they are getting a little older, they're getting ready for twin beds and I feel like it's a good time to just give their whole room a refresh and fully decorate it. So, even though there are a few things, we are basically starting from scratch here.
I decided to go with black and white. I am not sure exactly why I finally decided on this (I had several different colors schemes and theme ideas in my head) but it just feels right for them, so I'm going with it.
Their walls are painted gray and I'm not planning to re paint at this point, since we probably won't stay in this house that much longer.
We will be moving them to twin beds soon, and we are getting them a set of beds that can stack as bunk beds or be 2 twins. We'll use them as 2 separate twins for at least the next several years. (I can guarantee someone would end up with a broken bone if we let them have bunk beds. Plus, they are way too young for bunk beds, I think!) These are the beds we are ordering.
I went back and forth on what color to get the beds in. I really liked how these beds looked gray, but since their walls are gray I thought that would be too much. I was concerned about getting them white beds because they are really messy boys, and I feel like they'll get so dirty and/or ruined being white, but my husband didn't like how the black beds looked, so white it is! I am kind of thinking the boys will use them in this house, and when we move in a couple years, we might have the girls and boys switch beds. We'll see.

Going with a black & white theme, I ordered them these comforters. I just love them and think they are so classic looking. I think they will grow with them, and even if we switch the theme of their room in a few years, these could really go with anything if we add different pillows and such, since they're so neutral.

Side note: I was reminding my husband the other night that I actually wanted to do our first nursery in black & white with a few pops of color! At that time (in 2011) I couldn't find ANY black & white things for a nursery or kids room. There was just nothing. So I guess I have actually had this idea in my mind for 6+ years and now I'm finally using it since the world seems to have gained a lot of black & white kids room decor!
Speaking of decor, it seems like a random mish mash of things, but I tried to choose some things I knew the boys would love, and that could grow with them. I will probably get a few more things (I really am trying to keep it pretty simple, though) but here is what I've got so far.

The Exodus 14:14 prints I am planning to blow up poster size, frame and hang on one wall. I had originally planned to hang them over their beds, but now we are planning to have their beds pretty far apart so I don't think that would look right. This is a verse I prayed over them a lot while we were fighting and waiting to adopt them.
The Hey Bro print we have had hanging in their room for awhile. They say 'hey bro' to each other all the time in the cutest way, so when I saw it, I knew it was perfect. Turns out it will still work out really well in their room and just give a little pop of color! The one we have is actually blue and green, not yellow.
They have a dresser now that I am planning on painting, probably white. It will go between their beds and I think the nightlight will sit on that. I may do a framed family photo on there as well, not sure yet.
They will each have one of the throw pillows on their bed, but I will probably end up with a couple other throw pillows for each of them.
I haven't decided yet where I'm going to hang the panda head. I've been thinking about possibly getting a tapestry for one of their walls, probably the one above their beds and dresser. If I do that, I'm not sure where to put the Panda. He may or may not end up staying.
My in laws threw them a superhero adoption party and I kept some framed pictures, similar to these that I am planning to hang.
I want to get a few shelves to hang on either side of their window. I can't find anything local that I love, so I may order from IKEA. I found some floating shelves at Target that I like, but they never have them in stock and they can't be ordered. I'm looking at these from IKEA, and possibly going to do either 2 or 3 on each side.
I have plans for several cute things to put on their shelves, whenever we do hang those. My husband's aunt is going to do something with their names that I am thinking I'll put there, and I'm excited to see those!
I also haven't quite decided on a rug. I don't want to have way too much going on as far as patterns, but I feel like they'll need something for the empty space between their beds and in front of the dresser. I've been going back and forth between this one from IKEA and this one from Rugs USA. We don't have an IKEA close by, so shipping to get it here is outrageous, unfortunately.
Ok, well, that was probably way more talking than 1 person needs to do about bedroom decor. So, I'll leave it at that. I will definitely do a post when I finish getting it altogether, so you can see how it turns out! I am excited for it to be complete!

Pesto Meatball Soup

It is a cold, dreary, rainy day here in the midwest today, so it seemed like the perfect time to share this soup recipe. It is one of our favorites and on rotation in our house frequently in the fall and winter months!
Here's everything you'll need:

32 ounce package frozen Italian style meatballs
4 cans Italian diced tomatoes
2 cans cannellini beans (drained)
1 jar basil pesto
1 cup water
2-3 large handfuls of spinach
Shredded parmesan

Combine all ingredients except spinach & parmesan into a large pot.
Bring to a boil, and simmer until meatballs are heated through.
Add spinach and let it soften.
Top with a heaping bit of shredded parmesan!
This makes about 10 servings for our family. We love to serve it with a side salad and warm bread.
Enjoy!

Freezer Breakfasts

Last month, our mornings changed SO much with having to be up and out the door to take kids to classes and activities. We have always had a really laid back schedule, for the most part. It was a huge adjustment. Breakfast time has always been one of the craziest times of day in my house, because everybody wakes up at a different time, and seems to want something different, and people are getting dressed and getting hair fixed and this kid needs help with this thing and that kid needs help with that thing. Whew. I knew it wouldn't work out well if it kept being that chaotic when we needed to actually be places in the mornings. So, I wondered if I could cook up a bunch of breakfasts ahead of time and freeze them, just like people do with dinners. Would it save me time, and still allow me to feed my family a healthy breakfast?
I did it for the month of September and it worked out SO well, that I decided to do it from now on. I've done it twice now and it took me about an hour and a half to two hours (not including clean up) to make breakfasts for 4 kids for an entire month (weekdays only). We don't really buy cereal, but we decided to start doing "cereal Sundays" and letting the kids pick a box each week to have on Sundays. They went absolutely crazy for this idea. It's perfect because our family is big enough to eat about a box between all of us, and then it isn't sitting around temping me to eat it all week ;) (I love cereal....)
In September, I made:
Egg Cups (did NOT freeze well. They were delicious straight out of the oven, but I won't make them again to freeze.)
Sausage Links
Smoothie packs

I also had on hand (not homemade):
Whole Grain Frozen waffles for waffle sandwiches
Chobani yogurt tubes
Fresh fruit

My kids almost always eat a banana first thing in the morning, and they are always welcome to have fruit or yogurt if breakfast wasn't enough. They usually drink milk at breakfast, as well.

In October, I made:
Sausage links
Smoothie packs
Banana muffins (chocolate chips added, of course)
Pumpkin muffins

I am also planning to do overnight oats one evening a week for the following morning, using this recipe.

If you have any delicious, kid friendly, easily freezable breakfast ideas for me, please send them my way!

What a Family of 6 Eats in a Week

It is probably a weird source of entertainment, but I LOVE watching grocery hauls on YouTube, or reading What I Ate posts on blogs. Super random, I know. I always get really good ideas for meals, or just things for my kids to eat! I also really like watching cleaning videos....so, so random, but it is so satisfying to watch houses get clean. I realize I am a weirdo. ANYWAY, I get a lot of questions about how much food our family eats. Some friends recently were over and asked if we are buying stock in bananas because we just had so many. Nope, just a regular week for our family of 6! It is funny to me to think back to how much our family used to spend on groceries, and how much our smaller family used to eat. Our grocery budget has more than doubled in the past few years, partly due to growing our family, some of it based on changes in our eating and such. I figured it might be easier to take a video rather than take pictures of every single thing--that could get lengthy! So here is what our family of 6 (2 adults, 1 school aged, 1 preschooler, and 2 toddlers who eat like grown men, not exaggerating) eats in a week!

The total for the week was $145.74.
Like I said, I love seeing what other people eat, so if you've posted anything lately, let me know!
